A Guide to Buying Tractors

When you think of tractors what do you think of?  The first thing that may come to mind is farming.  Tractors can serve many different purposes at the farm.  They are an essential tool to take care of farm chores and duties.  They can do anything from pulling a tractor to working in the garden and come in all different sizes and with different power abilities.

Tractors were first produced in 1868 and were steam-powered.  They were used mostly for hauling things by road and especially for the lumber trade.  These steam-powered tractors looked like small trains that ran on the road and were operated by one person.  In 1889, the first gasoline powered tractor was created.  A thresher hooked his tractor up to the threshing machine and found that it worked quite well.

Tractors then had many technological improvements, which helped to move farming into more of a technological event.  They helped farmers produce more food products for eating and selling with less labor than would have been necessary if the work would have been done manually.  The invention of the tractor also helped usher in other uses of technology for farming.

How do you decide what kind of tractor that you need for your purposes?  Look at the lay of your land to see what you need the tractor to do.  If you need it to mow down cornstalks then you will want a tractor that is built higher off the ground to mow them down.  On the other hand, if you have hills that you will be riding the tractor on, then you will want to choose one that has a decreased chance of rolling.  Go outside, look around, and think about the purposes that you are going to use the tractor for.  Then you will have a better idea of your needs.

Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, then it is time to go shopping.  Before you go shopping, decide how much you can afford for your tractor.  In this way, you will know exactly what price range that you are looking in and will not waste your time looking at ones that are over your budget.  Whether you are looking for a new or used tractor, you will need to test drive it to make sure that you are comfortable driving it.  Ask any questions that you may have about operating the tractor.

Tractors can be used for anything from pulling a trailer, clearing fields, helping with planting or reaping, or anything else.  In most cases, buying a tractor is a huge investment that should not be taken lightly.  If you do your research and check out several different kinds of tractors, then you should be able to make your decision with little or no difficulty.  Ask questions of friends, family, and neighbors who own tractors to see what they like or dislike about their tractor.  This can also help you to make a decision.  Once you have covered all your bases, then you are ready to make a decision!
