Half of all Canadians have a pet or companion animal in their home and with literally billions of dollars spent yearly on pet care, it can be seen that Canada takes the needs of its companion animals very seriously. If you are a Canadian citizen, you will have many options open to you for pet insurance, and by doing your research and making sure you get the whole story, you can save yourself a lot of time and heartbreak later on..

When people think of pet insurance, the first thing that they usually think of is veterinarian visits. One thing to keep in mind is what that actually entails. If you have a very young animal, like a kitten or a puppy, they will probably require spaying or neutering and a large battery of tests and vaccinations. This can really add up and you might be relying on pet insurance to help you cover the expenses. This is actually something a lot of policies don't cover, as they call it elective care and preventative care, respectively. While some insurance polices do say they cover it, check and be sure, because sudden surprises regarding veterinarian bills are never fun. Even if your policy doesn't specifically cover it, you can always ask to see if things like spaying and vaccinations can be added on.

You will also think about what kind of pet you need to insure, and what the situation is with it. Many pet insurance polices will refuse cover older animals, or will do so at a rate that is fairly exorbitant. While of course the best thing to do is to insure your animal as soon as you bring him home, you can very well be in a situation where you have adopted an older pet. Similarly, pets with preexisting health problems can be difficult to insure. In any case, you can expect higher premiums, and you will want to read up on the coverage provided very carefully. There is often a limit to how much coverage will provided depending on the situation, so be sure to plan ahead.

Similarly, keep in mind that as most premiums are adjusted, you will pay more as the animal gets older. If the premiums become prohibitively expensive, you may need to cancel the policy just as it becomes a necessity!

There are many things to keep in mind when considering insurance for your beloved pet, but if the worst happens, you will be glad that you have insurance that will cover the burden of the fees.
