College campuses all across the United States have at least one thing in common with all over their college students: credit card debt. No matter how you spin the wheel, college students will always be among the highest in the United States population to have the most credit card debt at any one time. Why do so many college students have credit card debt and what is being done about it? It seems as though those two questions are asked over and over again, but college students are still plagued with high credit card debt, high interest rates for those credit cards, as well as hundreds of credit card companies sending out pre-qualification notices in the mail to college students at every campus across the United States of America.

According to Bankrate.com, the average undergraduate in college carries a credit card balance altogether of just over $2100. Unfortunately, if you're a graduate student in college, that figure more than doubles. Graduate students carry about $5800 in credit card debt and the debt keeps mounting with each and every credit card bill that goes unpaid. With only 17% of college students not having a credit card, the credit card debt that plagues college campuses around America is shocking! Since there are more than 9 million students attending a four year college, that 17% doesn't seem so large.

But what is the real problem behind college student credit card debt? Many people contend that learning about credit starts with the parents and their parents should teach their college students the responsibility of credit and owning a credit card before even jumping off to college in the first place. However, would that still make a difference? With college students receiving between 25 and 50 credit card offers each college semester or quarter, the offer to have a credit card makes itself all the more real when credit card companies decide to bombard students. Sometimes the enticing credit card offer is just enough for some students to be reeled in, send in their information, and receive a credit card through the mail with a reasonable and high spending limit. So it may be the fault of the credit card companies who are bombarding college students with financial burdens that are more than they can afford while on college.

Nevertheless, everyone should learn personal responsibility. One important guidelines for the debt-filled college students to learn, however, is that one should never fill out a credit card offer unless and until they have a job on-campus or off-campus to pay their credit card bill. Having a job is the first step that should be taken before accepting a credit card. Because the credit is cash and some sort of monetary value that you don't actually have, it should be a heavy responsibility that shouldn't be taken lightly. All in all, college students are still plagued with credit card debt each year, but there should be some solutions to having the numbers go down, even if it only starts with credit card education!
