While receiving a credit card through the
mail can be an easy thing to do, paying off that credit card and
making sure that your credit report remains spotless can be twice
as hard! Unfortunately, thousands of consumers in America carry
a lot of credit and debt obligations that they pay each month.
Americans are carrying just over $5000 in credit card debt alone
each year and that figure has not dropped dramatically in quite
some time and probably won't until Americans start using their
credit cards and credit allowances more wisely on the whole. Unfortunately,
however, getting rid of debt in your life can be more difficult
than filling out the form to actually receive that credit card.
Considering that a large amount of people and families in America
not only make an income that's below the poverty level but also
live paycheck to paycheck, paying off the debt and credit cards
that they owe, or consolidating the debt can seem like no easy
task!
However, all that being said, there are
still many ways in which consumers in America are able to legally
eliminate debt from their lives forever! There are many ways in
which this can be done, but unfortunately, not all of these ways
are easy to do. But the first way that many debt experts recommend
is to use a budget and to stick to it. But one might ask how you
can use a budget while you only have a limited amount of money
each month and still owe a big chunk to your debtors? Nothing in
life is easy and the same is true for sticking to a budget. So
the first thing that you should figure out is how to pay down those
large credit card bills in the first place. Here is a classic example
of how paying the minimum amount on your credit card bill will
literally get you nowhere: if you pay the minimum amount each month
on a credit card bill that is slightly over $5500 then you will
be paying that credit card for over 30 years! Not only will you
be paying it for that long, but you'll also be paying over $15,000
in credit card interest!
The first common-sense solution to becoming
debt free is to focus on one credit card or debt at a time. For
the first credit card, you will be paying that off over the next
2 to 3 months. Taking a large chunk of your income (within reason,
of course) and plopping it down on the credit card that has the
highest amount to pay is what should be done for the next few months
in order to pay it off. Of course, you may have to forgo the extra
frills in your daily life for the next few months, but becoming
debt-free should be more important than purchasing a Big Mac from
McDonald's for a midnight snack! Once you've paid off one credit
card, you can now do the same thing for any other credit cards
that you have! This will enable you to become debt free over the
next year or however many credit cards that you have!
Another suggestion to becoming debt free
is to speak with a credit and debt counselor in your area to be
able to figure out good solutions to your debt problem! Not only
will these companies help you figure out solutions, but they will
often speak to your creditors on your behalf to either be able
to settle your accounts or to lower your payments each month! This
process is known as 'Debt Consolidation', and taking advantage
of these organizations and services as a consumer is something
which more Americans should do. As you can literally have the same
amount of debt, but yet be paying much less money out each month
to service it!
All in all, legally eliminating debt from your life is not a hard
task to do if you put your nose to the grindstone. Even though
it might take a little bit of sacrificing and willpower to actually
become debt free, the personal reward for doing so totally outweighs
the sacrifices!
