What do you do when you car dies and
the mechanic pronounces your engine dead? After freaking
out over the cost he gives you for a brand new engine, consider
finding a used engine for your car. Used engines can be
found with low mileage and have lots of power left in them for
much less than a new engine. It
also helps the environment by using something that is perfectly
useful and sitting in a junkyard. (Alternatively, you can
also get a quick, cheap auto financing quote by taking a few seconds
to fill out the form on the left - If getting another engine sounds
like a lot of hassle ;))
So, where do you find a good used engine?
Used
engines can be found in many different locations. Some machine
shops might have a used engine for your car. You can also
locate them online, at junkyards, at salvage yards, through friends,
or at a swap meet. If you can find one at the junkyard, you
might even be able to see the condition of the car that the engine
came out of or crank it up to see what condition it is in. The
hard part will be searching for one, but do not give up. You
will find that perfect engine for your car that has lots of life
and power left.
Once
you find an engine that will fit in your car, then you need to
find a mechanic to install it for you. If you have a regular
mechanic, then ask him if he will install your used engine. If
not, then you need to ask for recommendations from friends and
family who they would recommend for your car. Go to the mechanic
of your choice and ask if he will install a used engine that you
have located at the junkyard (or whatever your location) into your
car.
He may ask you details about it so
he can go take a look at it before you have it delivered to his
shop. This would be
a very good decision on his part and will give you that extra level
of comfort in his opinion as well. If your mechanic will
not go check it out, it would be best if you found someone who
knows something about engines to look at it, especially if you
found it in the recesses of the junkyard.
You
may also find that machine shops in your area rebuild engines and
this might be a possibility that you might want to look at. It
will cost a little more than a used engine out of a junked car,
but you will have some sort of guarantee that it works and that
might be worth the extra few dollars. They are still used,
but have some new components as well as being cleaned and spruced
up.
The
three main words to remember when searching for a good used engine
for your car or truck are availability, price, and quality. When
you find an engine that fits your car, is at the right price, and
is of good quality, then you have hit a homerun! And you
will be back on the road again before you know it!
